Description:

Žilina has long been the economic centre of northwest Slovakia, but since the country’s independence in 1993, the area has taken on an even greater significance. One of the largest towns in the Slovak Republic, Zilina is strategically located halfway between Slovakia’s two largest cities, Bratislava and Kosice and just 260 km from Vienna. Slovakia’s prime industry is car production, and Zilina is situated right at the hub of this sector. The region’s significance has grown in recent years, after South Korean car maker KIA Motors opened a major car plant with long-term plans to produce 300,000 cars and 300,000 engines annually. The region will soon be producing over two million automobiles per year. Other industrial sectors are present in the region as well, including mechanical engineering, chemicals, textile, electro-technical, paper production and construction. The University of Zilina has seen rapid growth in recent years. Formerly known as the School of Transportation and Communications, the university has grown from three to seven faculties, with a focus on technology, economics and management. The region is gaining renown for its research activity as well, especially in transport, ICT, engineering, chemical, textile and food processing. Historically known as an important crossroads, Zilina remains a critical regional railway and motorway junction. Companies based in Zilina include: Kia, Drevoindustria, Povazske Chemical Works, Tento, Slov-Avia, Vahostav, The Slovak Energetic Co., The Slovak Energetic Dispatching, ZVL (anti-friction bearings).
